Yea, Lord, I dare promise, that if thou wilt have mercy upon me, it shall tend to the glory of thy grace, andalso to the increase of thy kingdom; for I will tell it, and sinners will hear on't. This man has most need, he is furthest from God, nearest tohell, and so one that has most need. Is there not every where in God's book a flat contradiction to this, in multitudes of promises, of invitations, of examples, and the like? But when she, from a turn upon her heart, went into the city, and said to her neighbours, 'Come,' Oh, how they came!
When John told Christ, that they saw one casting out devils in his name, and they forbade him, because he followed not with them, what is the answer of Christ? But I was one of them that plotted to take away his life. I also was one that mocked him, when in anguish he hanged bleeding on the tree. Yea, Lord, I dare promise, that if thou wilt have mercy upon me, it shall tend to the glory of thy grace, and also to the increase of thy kingdom; for I will tell it, and sinners will hear on't. And when they had nothing to pay, hefrankly forgave them both.
For my part, I believe that the time is at hand, that we shall see better saints in the world than has been seen in it this many a day. He loved to proclaim the grace of God to sinners and earnestly persuaded his hearers to embrace Christ by faith with him. He knows that such an one will love more than many that havenot sinned half their sins. But the biggest sinner has most need. O blessed be God for grace says the otherfor then I hope there is favour for me.

I have found, through God's grace, good success in preaching upon this subject, andperhaps, so I may by my writing upon it too. How shall I set thee as Zeboim?
And as he spake these last words, she thought he pitched his innocent eyes just upon her, and looked as if he spake what was now said to her: wherefore her heart began to tremble, being shaken with affection and fear; then her eyes ran down with tears apace; wherefore she was forced to hide her face with her handkerchief; and so sat sobbing and crying all the rest of the sermon.
I say, what excuse can theymake The Jerusalem Sinner Saved; or themselves, when they shall be asked why they did not in the day of salvationcome to Christ to be saved?
And that they were to have the first offer of his grace, the text is as clear as the sun; for it saith, "Begin at Jerusalem. Tell me therefore which of them will love him most?
But who are these? But what wasthe reason thereof, I mean the reason from God? Just before Christ came into the flesh, the world was degenerated as it is now: thegenerality of the men in Jerusalem were become either high and famous for hypocrisy,or filthy, base in their lives.
It was not I, but the grace of God that was with me. I say, what excuse can they make for themselves, when they shall be asked why they did not in the day of salvation come to Christ to be saved?
I came not to call the righteous, but the sinners to repentance' Mark For every one of you, says Peter. It is three or four and twenty years since I saw the book; yet I have, as far as my memory will admit, given you the relation of the matter.
The commission is, as you see, for the preaching of the gospel, and is very distinctly inserted in the holy record by Matthew and Mark. God's Word has two edges; it can cut back-stroke and fore-stroke. For while he was yet alive, even while he was yet inJerusalem, and perceived, even among these Jerusalem sinners, which was the mostvile among them, he still, in his preaching, did signify that he had a desire thatthe worst of these worst should, in the first place, come unto him.
All this flows from our first scripture proof; I came to call them that have need; to call them first, while the rest look on and murmur. Why did I not read and pray that I might understand, since now I perceive that God said then, he giveth liberally to them that pray, and upbraideth not; Jam.
They talk of the church of Rome, and set her in her primitive state, as a pattern and mother of churches; when the truth is, they were the Jerusalem sinners, when converts, that out-did all the churches that ever were. They to whom much is forgiven, love much; and the same native energieswhich had been misdirected to promote evil, when sanctified and divinely guided, become a great blessing to the church, and to society at large.
But, I say, Christ is resolved to set up his light in the world; yea, he is delighted to see his graces shine; and therefore he commands that his gospel should, to that end, be offered, in the first place, to the biggest sinners; for by great sins it shineth most; therefore he saith, 'Begin at Jerusalem.
Could he not, think you, have stooped from the cross to the ground, and have laid hold on some honester man, if he would? He knows that such an one will love more than many that have not sinned half their sins. As 'tis said of the man last mentioned, whom Christ cured towards the beginning of his ministry: "And he departed," says the text, "and began to publish in Decapolis, how great things Jesus had done for him; and all men did marvel," ver.'The Jerusalem Sinner Saved' is the fruit of Bunyan’s thinking on the grace of forgiveness—‘Good News for the Vilest of Men’.

Bunyan goes on to lay out his argument for this very methodically, using lots of Scripture, mainly from the New Testament, but lots of Old Testament too.
